As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday....we must remember that there are others out there not as fortunate. The holidays are a time for giving. We always give to our family, friends and co-workers but I encourage everyone to give to someone in need. One who doesn't have a home or family to share a hot meal with. The spirit of every day (not just the holidays) should be a spirit of giving. If we come together to bless someone else, the world would be a better place. Not only are there people starving in foreign countries but right here on in our own neighborhoods. Won't you join me and my family and give of yourself and do something special for someone in need?

I am so delayed with this post (and any post for that matter- sorry) but I can't help but talk about my recent trip to Mexico. 2009 I Do Brunch

I had the pleasure of being introduced to the work of Marni Gold, Owner and Designer of Creative Custom Cardboxes at Linnyette Richardson-Hall's 2009 I DO Brunch. Since then I literally became her fan (and Facebook fan). Marni's work is so creative! The card boxes can be used for so many things such as weddings (as a cardbox, guestbook or well wishes box), parties, showers or as a centerpiece/decoration in your office.

I plan to order mine soon and it will be a multi-purpose box (centerpiece, suggestion box, cardbox for private events and whatever else I think of). Calligraphy

Calligraphy....there is nothing like it. It is an art that just gives that final touch of class to your event. From invitations, place cards/escort cards, programs, menu card and thank you cards, calligraphy just puts a spin of class on your entire event!

I admit it, I am a Facebook junkie but I spend much of my time networking with other wedding professionals. I came across a company, Calligraphy by Jennifer and immediately fell in love with her work and her posts.

Take a moment to visit her website and see the difference calligraphy can make for your event. It's not as expensive as you think and it will save lots of time. I know labels are a quick, inexpensive and easy way but I am very old school and believe that invitations should be personalized for weddings. She is available for all types of events and you won't be able to resist once you feast your eyes on her work!

Weddings on a Budget....Option 2

Okay Option Number 2....Scale Back the Bar. Notice I did not suggest a cash bar but scale it back! If you invited someone to your affair as a guest, they should be treated as such and not be expected to pay for anything. I do not recommend a cash bar, especially for weddings. Sometimes in order to have things you really want, all you have to do is examine the areas that are of less importance to both of you and and scale things back a little. Alcohol aka 'The Bar" can be large part of the reception expense so if you are not big drinkers, why not start there?

1. Look to offer a beer wine and soda bar versus a full open bar (even $5 less per person makes a big difference).
2. Offer a non-alcoholic bar with one or two alcoholic signature drinks.
3. Set a bottle of wine or champagne at each table. This is a good option depending on how many tables you are serving and the cost of the drink of choice you are providing.
4. A champagne punch is a nice touch. It offers a little something for the taste buds and is often a nice display as well.
5. If your venue does not have a liquor license and allows you to bring in your alcohol, consider staying away from the hard liquor and offer a pre-mixed drinks. This will save you money on all the various ingredients. Consult with a professional bartender for suggestions.
6. Offer a Consumption bar. Now this only works well if you have a non-drinking crowd. Be sure that you know your people before deciding on this option because sometimes people will tend to drink more since they are not paying for it. If you choose this option, establish a limit up front.
7. Offer an open bar for cocktail hour only. You can either scale back the bar during the rest of the reception or switch to a non-alcoholic bar.
8. Utilize drink tickets where you offer each guest one to two drinks for the event. (*I am not really a big fan of this though).
9. If you chose to host a brunch affair, you can offer mimosas instead of a full bar.
10. When in doubt, take it out. If you don't drink and don't want to see people tipsy at your event, stick to your guns and don't have a bar at all. Offer drinks like iced tea, lemonade or punch. Add a twist to it and make your drinks match your color scheme. Also consider offering mocktails (the non-alcoholic version of a cocktail). This works great for teen events! If people love you, they will come to support you no matter what you serve.

Today I post a tribute to a woman who has been an inspiration to me and so many other young women around the world. I believe in giving tribute while people are alive. Although she may never see this post, I must thank her for all her WORDS OF WISDOM. She inspired the name of my blog (because she speaks Words from her heart) and she is the author of my two most favorite quotes. She helps change the world by inspiring others with her words and the sound of her voice. She is none other than Dr. Maya Angelou.

Today, Dr. Angelou, I salute you and thank you for being the Phenomenal woman that you are. Thank you for encouraging me and women like me to be a Phenomenal woman, wife, mother, woman of color and woman of God.

Tips for Outdoor Ceremonies

Outdoor weddings are very beautiful but there are certain things one should take into consideration before deciding on your location/venue.

One of our clients recently attended two outdoor weddings. Although the view was beautiful, the sun was blazing and she was extremely hot and bothered. Wedding Planners are an excellent resource for many things but we do not possess control over the weather.

Here are a few tips to help you plan for and keep your guests comfortable during an outdoor wedding:

1. Host the ceremony in the morning before the temperature gets too hot or later in the evening when the sun is beginning to set. Be sure to allow enough natural light for pictures if you decide on a sunset wedding.

2. Offer guests a parasol or a hand held fan to help keep them cool. The best part is the parasol can also serve as a favor and of fans can be used as programs which is always a nice touch.

3. Tent your Event - tents are a great option for shade or as an option for inclement weather. The flip side is that they tend to be a bit pricey so be sure you can afford the use of a tent. (FYI - tents can be used for receptions as well. You can add flooring and lighting to your decor to maximize the beauty of the reception and add cooling units to keep your guests cool).

4. Be sure to have a back up plan in case of inclement whether. Many venues offer an inside location as an alternative option.

5. Choose a location with trees nearby. Trees are not only a natural beauty and great for pictures but they are a saving grace when it comes to offering shade from the sun.

6. Look into hosting your event near the water. Not only does it offer a nice background but it is usually much cooler near a natural body of water.

7. Select a venue that offers a covered pavilion. Some are equipped with ceiling fans and outlets for power and some even have sides that come down to protect you and your guests from rain and the wind.

There are a lot more tips to I could offer but hopefully these will help you get started with planning for your outdoor ceremony and selecting a venue. It's all about you and your fiance on your wedding day. Keep the guests focused on you and beat the heat!

Welcome to our Newest Clients - Tamika and Gary

API is pleased to welcome our newest Bride and Groom, Tamika and Gary. This couple is nicknamed our "$5.00 Bride and Groom". Every time I say it, people ask..."What does that mean?"

Well, when I first asked the couple what their budget was, Tamika replied, $5.00 and Gary concurred. All I could do was laugh because one would expect someone to say a figure in the thousands. Tamika was the Maid of Honor in one of our former clients weddings so her joking personality was not new to me but it quickly reminded me of the crazy we times had with her friend's bridal party. Instantly I knew I was going to have fun with this couple. When asked what the budget of the dress would be, she responded $5.00 and so now it's a running joke.

Please don't get the wrong impression. Tamika and Gary are not cheap. They know the value of a beautiful wedding and are willing to pay for it as long as it is within her real budget which is what I like...they are realistic. As we proceed through this planning process, we will be sure to share bits and pieces about their their voyage down the ocean of matrimony (hint...hint).

Weddings on A Budget...Option 1

For those who are working with a budget but don't want to skimp on style and class, there are a lot of creative ways you can slightly alter your plans and still have the wedding of your dreams. Over the next few weeks, I will discuss some alternative options for our Brides on a Budget.

Option #1 - Brunch Weddings
Brunch weddings are a great way to celebrate your nuptials without killing your pockets. Breakfast and lunch are definitely less expensive than dinner so typically depending on the selected venue, the cost for brunch will be significantly less than the cost of dinner. Brunch weddings can get away with a lighter bar or no bar at all since the festivities will tend to begin so early. The host can choose to have mimosas, champagne punch or just a signature drink instead of a full open bar thus saving a significant amount of money. Most banquet brunches are 4 hour affairs; however, you can elect to add additional time if you prefer.

I had the pleasure of working with Isis Petrie of Posh Events at one of her weddings and I loved it. The look, feel and excitement was exactly the same. The menu was superb and gave the guests a lot to choose from. The only thing that was different is that the menu was a combination of breakfast and lunch foods, it was still light outside once things concluded and I actually had the rest of the day to do something else. I also fell in love with the venue. I loved it so much that I recommended to one of my clients!!

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so having a Brunch Wedding is simply an awesome idea. Once the Bride and Groom are done, they can elect to have an after party or get a jump start on being ready for the honeymoon.

I Do Brunch 2010 - Better late than never

I can't believe I am just blogging about this. Please forgive me.

Okay so in April I had the time of my life!!! I attended the second annual I Do Brunch sponsored by the Wedding DIVA, Linnyette Richardson Hall of Baltimore, MD. I look forward to this event every year because I rarely get the opportunity to attend an event as a guest and let my hair down. (okay so I don't have much to let down but you know what I mean). LOL

The Diva and her team really outdid themselves. It was nothing less than FABULOUS. I loved the decor, food, mimosas, comradery and the chance to dance (which is something I love to do). This year, the DIVA added a HAT competition. Well that was simply awesome. The ladies, Mark Kingsdorf and I sported our fabulous hats which was beyond fun. I haven't worn a hat in years so this gave me the chance to do it. I made to the finals too (see the picture below). This event also gave me a chance to meet some of my colleagues face to face that I have been talking to via Facebook and over the internet and it gave my team a chance to get away and have girl fun.

Now the food was plentiful and delicious but oh my...can you say.. grits bar!!! Loved it. Sunday morning grits (on a Saturday) in a martini glass with brown sugar, cheese and honey for toppings. To die for!!

Last but not least, for the out of town guests that stayed at the host hotel, the DIVA provided transportation in style!! She allowed crazy old me on a party bus so you know I made sure the party bus was poppin'. My team and I trulyhad a ball.

There are so many trends coming down the pike for 2010 so I have chosen to focus on a few of my favorites.....

Anyone who knows me knows that PURPLE is my absolute favorite color!! So to know that it is designated as one of the hottest colors for 2010 is no surprise to me. I could have told you that a long time ago. (Smile). Purple is royalty and it's associated with nobility and spirituality.

In 2010, expect to see more decor with the deepest of purples (violet, eggplant and royal purple) and combined with colors like red, orange, green and of course gold. While I love any shade of purple, it's time let go of the lavender and step outside the box. As you embark on my passion for purple, I invite you to join for a little taste of Purple Rain!!

He Put a Ring on it!!

I received great news from my friend, Isis Petrie of Posh Events today at 12:44 a.m. (exactly) that she got engaged!! I am so excited for her and her fiance. I knew it was coming down the pike but didn't know when. And the great thing about it was he was able to surprise her. Trying to surprise a wedding planner can be hard but he did it and the reaction was priceless...Tears of Joy. I am honored that I was among the first people she shared it with and even more proud that she has asked me to be part of her wedding celebration.

From the moment I met Isis, she has always said she was going to be the non-traditional Bride. She is so full of ideas and excitement over her day and I can't wait for her wedding. It will truly be an extension of her and her fiance. Even Wedding Planners know better than to try and handle it all themselves...we take our own advice. Fortunately she has a slew of colleagues to lean on and bounce ideas off of..Membership has privileges.

Congrats Isis and Charlie. This was a great New Year's present!! Love you guys!!

Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend...

'Tis the season of engagements!! Over the holidays many couples will take their relationships to the next level. Some were proposed to on Christmas Eve or Christmas day and some proposals will take place between New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Whatever day you choose, make it special and make it memorable.

Here's some professional advice to the Proposer...(granted some women are proposing these days too)

1. When picking a ring, get an idea of the style and shape your soon to be fiance likes. While it is your gift to her, she will be wearing it on a daily basis and you want it to be something that she LOVES. Talk to her mother or best friend if you need help. But they must be sworn to secrecy.
(Look for a future post on what to look for when buying a diamond.)

2. I'm very traditional in that before you should ask for the parents blessings before proposing. I think it shows respect and it will get the in-laws on your side from the beginning. If you've been dating for a while, they know it's coming. What better way to start off then knowing parents are in your corner.

3. Plan the proposal. This is not the time to use the Nike theme..Just Do it. You want this to be special and memorable. Whether you chose to do it in an intimate session or in front of friends and family...make it a moment that both of you will remember and that is special or significant to both of you.

4. Capture the moment (if you can). Have someone take pictures or shoot video for you so you can remember the moment. Even if it's an intimate dinner, photojournalists have a way of shooting without being noticed. What better moment memory than to capture that smile or that tear as you ask her to marry you.

5. Sometimes Brides get caught up in the emotion and forget to respond to the proposal...so if she does, repeat the question again and get that rock solid answer to go with that rock solid diamond.

Grand-Reopening at the Crowne Plaza Philadelphia City Avenue

Last Thursday, I attended a Grand Reopening at the Crowne Plaza City Avenue in Philadelphia. The hotel was formerly a Holiday Inn. The hotel underwent renovations and reopened at the Crowne Plaza about 1 year and a half ago. After going through some changes in management they decided to host an event for their clients, local event planners, hotel guests, etc. The staff was very pleasant and the rooms have a nice modern look to them now. The food was very tasty and as usual the opportunity to network was great. In the ballroom, they set up a mock guest room which I thought was a nice touch but the piece that attracted most people's attention was the cake provided by Bredenbeck's bakery that was an exact replica of the bed on the other side of the room. Great event!!

Planning your wedding day is very important and can become stressful at times. When beginning to plan this special day you should consider carefully who you want to be your (MOH) Maid of Honor. This position is crucial to the planning process. So let’s begin the picking!

Finding the right person may be hard if you have several close friends. So find a person who you can share your feelings with comfortably. This person should know when your upset, happy, confused, unsure, excited; so basically a friend who truly knows you. This is important because you will experience all these emotions and many more so you need someone who understands how you work. Don’t allow those who you don’t pick get to you. Remember this is your Wedding Day!

Now this special person will be there for you throughout the decision making process. She will assist you with possibly picking the wedding dress, she may have some input on the flowers, and even on which jewelry you will wear; but most importantly she will be by your side on the days approaching the wedding and on the day of your wedding. This day should be happy for both of you. So when you pick that special lady, be sure you have a tight bond. Don’t pick her because your mom likes her or because she is the only woman on your fiancé’s side. Make sure you know her and vice versa! This is important in your happiness for a successful wedding process and day. If you’re not happy, no one will be happy! So for your sake and hers find that person that’s best for you!

Brides to be...before you book the church, before you book the venue, before you buy a dress, before you spend one red cent....make sure you prepare a budget. Many brides start backwards and base their budget on price quotes they've received. Just because the price tag is on it, doesn't mean you can afford it. You need to base your budget on what you can honestly put aside between the date you decide to start planning and the time of the wedding, amount already put aside in a special wedding account or the amount your parents have set aside to finance the wedding. A budget lets you know what price range you need to stay in and helps keep you monitor your spending. It is so easy to get caught up in the moment.

So often I watch and listen to Brides plan their wedding, set the date, work out the budget, hire the event planner and off and running they go. The most important thing so many brides over look when planning their big day is taking the extra steps to take care of their health. Fatigue and stress becomes more apparent as the wedding date draws closer.

I can not begin to stress how important it is for brides to understand they must focus on their health along with planning for their wedding day. Planning a wedding is fun and exciting but can also be very stressful. A bride must deal with the demands and personalities of her family the groom’s family along with friends. That’s enough to make any body stress out or just go to the justice of peace.

If a bride wants to feel and look radiant she needs to incorporate a good healthy life style into her wedding plans. This will give a bride plenty of energy. She will feel great, look great and be ready for the challenge. I also encourage the groom to jump on the health band wagon so they can be support for each other. As an added bonus they both may drop a few pounds in the process.

A Tour of Romance- Jackie and Tyrell

API had the pleasure of coordinating the wedding for Jacquette and Tyrell Hargrove who were married on May 1, 2009. This couple's theme was a tour of romance. They chose to visit Paris and Italy for their honeymoon so what better way to capture the vision!! Here's how we carried out the theme..

To represent the ancient history in both of these destinations, we used scrolls throughout the wedding.

The ceremony program was white parchment paper trimmed with silver rolled up like a scroll
Table names were printed on rose colored horizontal scrolls that were at the center of each table
Each table name represented a location inParis or Italy that the couple planned to visit on their honeymoon.
In the cocktail room, we had one large board that listed each table name and an explanation of the history of the location. Around the board were pictures of each location.
Menu cards were printed on rose colored vertical scrolls and were placed at each place setting
Cake boxes contained rose colored scrolls with the couple's names and wedding date
Instead of a traditional guestbook, we created a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet with a rose colored scroll in the background that each guest was asked to complete that contained memories and well wishes from each guest. Sheets will be placed in a binder so they can cherish them forever.
For the look of romance, the Bride chose to shower her tables with pink orchids (linens were black floor length with black chairs) and the contrast was simply stunning.
Both the Bride and Groom were nurses so how romantic is it that they chose a cake topper that was made in their image in their work uniforms - loved this!!

This past weekend, I attended Linnyette Richardson Hall's I DO Brunch. It was an event strictly for wedding planners and it was awesome. This lady and her team are awesome Event Designers and I am a big fan of her work (not to mention she is sooo cool and down to earth) so when she put it out there, I made sure I bought a ticket the first week. She wowed me as I walked through the door just with the color scheme alone. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a purple fanatic so I love anything in the purple family. She paired up lavenders and lime green, purple and emerald green and everything was amazing. Not only was the decor the bomb but her LuxeTotes (the giveaway bag) made me feel like a kid in a candy store. So many neat things and great information. It was just to get out and enjoy myself and not have to work but the best part was getting to meet some of my colleagues from all over! I finally met some of my on-line friends face to face finally too!!

A big thank you and shout out to Linnyette and Team Diva (especially Robilyn for coming up with the idea) for hosting such a fabulous event. I posted pictures I took with my phone on my facebook page but I think my colleague Nicole Brown has much better pics. Check them out!!

This was a great activity and they were able to choose whatever fabrics ad decor items that were in the room to design their tables. So much creativity in the room. It was a great weekend!!! This was a competition.

The Brossman Center Meet & Greet

This weekend I attended a Brunch at the Br ossman Center at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (LTSP). The purpose of the event was to introduce the venue to local planners, brides, etc. and allow you to sample the tasty creations made by the venue's three exclusive caterers. I must say I had a great time networking with my colleagues but was very impresssed by all that the venue had to offer. I tasted for the first time, a cheesesteak egg roll by Blue Monkey Catering which was the bomb! I loved all the options offered by my friend Jewel at Tuxedo Caterers, especially the martini mash potato bar and Cura Hospitality put on twist on macaroni and cheese. Special thanks to Rita Faison from the LTSP, Randi Martin of Always Fabulous Events and Tanti Lina of Papertini for putting on a great event. Tanti did the florals and did a great job of bringing the West and the East together. Great job ladies!!

Designed for Success 2009 - Part I

Each year I hold a workshop for planners called Designed for Success. Students learn through both classroom style and hands on activities about various aspects of the business from pricing, contracts, initial meetings, presentations to event design and lighting. Special thanks to my friends and colleagues, Isis Petrie of Posh Events, Debbie Wallace of Elegant Affairs and Dion Magee of Dion Magee Events for assisting me as my guest speakers. I recently celebrated the BIG 40!! I am excited about another year of life. My staff surprised me at our recent workshop with a cake which of course brought tears to my eyes. I am very sentimental. Turning 40 is great for me. I look at it as getting wiser and getting better. Unfortunately I was sick on my birthday so my celebration is going to be delayed but I am blessed to be 40 & Fabulous!!!

Congrats to Shirley and Antoine

Congrats to our clients Shirley and Antoine for a wonderful celebration of love that occurred on Valentine's Day at the Merion in Cinnaminson, NJ. Their theme was LOVE and the colors were claret red, black and white. The couple chose to have alternating centerpieces of white birch branches (that were also used to align the ceremony aisle) and red rose centerpieces. I can't wait to share the pics. I should have them by the end of the week but below is an inspiration board I created for them with some of the actual things we used for the wedding. Also, below is a picture of their monogrammed runner by the Original Runner company in New York. The couple were serenaded by recording artist Glenn Jones as they shared their first dance together to "In You I Found Perfect Love". The couple's signature drink was a pomegranate martini which we called ..Sealed with a Kiss. It was truly a day where Love was in the air!!

Is your Marriage Valid??? Internet Ordained Officiants

A recent news article by Elizabeth Oakes, Wedding Examiner addressed a very important issue that may have a lot of Pennsylvania couples redoing their ceremony to ensure the validity of their marriage. According to the article, Pennsylvania state law states that anyone who solemnizes a marriage must have a regular congregation. Pennsylvania along with certain counties in Virginia and North Carolina are the only states that still prohibit non conventional clergy from legally solemnizing a marriage. Other states have instituted additional registration regulations that will allow "internet ordained" ministers to perform legal ceremonies in their states. This came as a result of a court case pressed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of a couple married by a minister ordained by the Universal Life Church. Fortunately for this couple, a Bucks County judge upheld the validity of their marriage but his ruling is only valid in Bucks County, PA.

A word to the wise...Be very careful in who you choose as your officiant. If you are in a state like mine and the officiant does not have an official congregation, that is a red flag. Do your research!! I'd suggest that you look for another officiant that is considered legal and valid by your state. If that is not an option, have an official judge/Justice of the Peace marry you ahead of time to ensure the validity. You can still have the internet ordained minister perform the ceremony but they won't have to sign any paperwork.

For those who decide not to use a professional event planner, here are some tips to help you design your room. Today's topic...the Bare Necessities - "The Table".

Before you can begin designing a table, here are a few things to consider:

What are the dimensions of your event space?
How many tables will you need? Based on the number of guests attending.
What size table will you be using? (60" round, 72"round, 6 ft banquet, 8 ft. banquet, half moon. crescent table, 48" tables, 36", bistro/30" cocktail tables, etc.)
What is the formality of the event (sit-down, cocktail/stand up reception, etc.)
What equipment does your venue supply versus what items you have to rent (confirm first if you are even permitted to bring in outside rentals
What is the vision and theme for your event
Most importantly.....what is your budget for linens and rentals. There is no need to consider renting if you can not afford the table. Remember to shop around but you get what you pay for.

Once you have these answers, then you can begin to move to the next level. Attached is a clip that will begin teaching you about the various types of tables and sizes. Enjoy!!

I attended an intimate wedding workshop today entitled "Bridal Wow 2009". The event was hosted by my colleague, Dion Magee of Dion Magee Events and took place at the stylish and beautiful Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick, NJ. Dion offered Brides a complimentary session that gave them a brief education about the Top Ten Trends for 2009, important tips to safeguard their wedding, cake tasting and the opportunity to network with a few local vendors and fellow brides and grooms. He also gave the couples "a moment with the expert" to ask questions about planning their wedding. The event was interactive, fun and the cakes were delicious. Dion is our guest speaker at API's 2009l Designed for Success Workshop and he is also the President of Black Bride and Groom Magazine. The magazines first 2009 issue will be coming out in the first week!! I am very excited about this issue because I have an article being published, "The Groom's Perspective".

It was great to spend the afternoon with Dion and every time I learn something new, it WOWs me!! It was also a great opportunity to network as well.

What a wonderful day it was to see Barack Obama swarn in as the 44th President of the United States. It sent chills threw my body and tears down my face. He is well deserving, intelligent and a strong individual who I am proud to call MY PRESIDENT!!! What a wonderful feeling to know that YES WE CAN is more than just a statement, it is a belief and way of life. Whatever your struggle, whatever road you travel, never give up, never give in....Just believe YES WE CAN!!

Instead of criticizing, take the time to pray for our leaders and lend a helping hand. If you are not part of the Solution, you are part of the problem and this is the year for CHANGE!!

Remembering the Man

Today we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday and we stop to honor and remember him for his life, his work and his accomplishments. Today we remember the man...the man who sacrificed his life for justice and equality and who paved the way for someone like me. In today's world, where people are quick to go to war, Dr. King and other civil rights leaders fought against discrimination and segregation with a non-violent approach. I wish people more people would take that approach, especially in my community.

Many of us take our freedoms for granted...the freedom to vote, go to whatever school you choose, sit anywhere on the bus you want and to hold positions of authority in our nation's government. We should never forget the struggles, the beatings, the hard roads traveled by those who fought for our freedom. The work of Dr. King has made it so people like Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell, Chaka Fattah, Vincent Hughes and Michael Nutter are able to hold the position they carry. What a wonderful feeling it must be for Dr. King and is wife Mrs. Corretta Scott-King to look down from heaven and see President Elect Barack Obama takes the Oath of Office for the President of the United States tomorrow. I am sure he is dancing and smiling with us. He had a Dream and that dream is still alive. We have made strides and overcome some obstacles but Dr. King's work is not finished and we must fight to keep his dream alive.

Thank you Dr. King for your sacrifice. API remembers you not just today but everyday.

As the 2009 Spring line rolls out for many wedding designers, I can't help but have my own picks for the season. There are so many designers out there to choose from and when you combine all the dresses from each designer, it's enough to make a new bride go crazy. My suggestion is to look through magazines, view designer's websites and select 1-3 different styles you like. The next step is to find a local bridal store that carries the styles and try them on to see which best accentuates your figure. Don't go alone. Take your mother, sister, Maid/Matron or Wedding Planner with you. Make sure it is someone you trust and someone who will be honest with you. You will know when you've found "THE DRESS" ...no other dress will compare and it will be a MUST HAVE even if you have to search for it or work overtime to afford it.

One of my current Brides went on a search to find her gown after finding it online. There were no local stores that carried it so she traveled from trunk show to trunk show in search of this dress. The designer located one that happened to be in her size and had it sent to a trunk show in Maryland (I believe). She traveled to Maryland with no hesitation, tried it on and fell in love. Need I say more?? You know she didn't leave out of there without purchasing "THE DRESS" of her dreams. I can't wait to see it on her.

'Tis the season for engagements!! This is the time (from December through February) where many couples will decide to take their relationships to the next level. Is it something in the water? No, it's in the air.... that's right Love is in the Air.

Congratulations to all the recently engaged couples! A special congratulations go out to my friend, Jackie Shuler and my colleague, Stacey Strickler who recently announced that they became a Bride-to-Be!! Being in love is a wonderful thing but being MARRIED is even better. I wish you all the best with your planning and in your marriage. Please share with us how your fiance proposed and when you became engaged.

To all my single ladies.... keep your head up, Cupid is on his way. Remain positive and wait patiently for the right one to come in your life. Some people think being a planner is tough. At times it can be but it is also very rewarding. As a planner you must be able to multi-task, be a leader, be effective and efficient. I think my ability to multi-task was strengthened when I took on a new position back in 1997. At this job, I wear several hats....the housekeeper, the cook, the dishwasher, the laundry person, the grocery shopper, the chauffeur and the sitter. It definitely requires the ability to multi-task. What job is this? It's called being a MOM. There is no compensation for this position but it has the best benefit package in the world. I had a video on here from You Tube called the Mom Song which was hilarious but they removed it from the server. I hope you had a chance to view it before it was removed.

I am so excited and can't wait to use it. This is the perfect gift for anyone who is like me...always on the go, doesn't sleep, constantly moving and working and never seems to relax. After spending a few days during the winter break with the kids in my family at the skating rink and the bowling alley, I am ready. This will truly do the body good!! Toppers here I come!!

Dolce Vita..... The Sweet Life

This was the theme to my good friend's Isis' 30th birthday celebration. It felt so great to get out and enjoy myself for a change. I kicked off my shoes and was on the dance floor all night long. It was a great escape for my hubby and I but believe me I was paying for it the next day. Can you say Ben Gay!! My body is not used to all of that activity but it was worth it. The room looked gorgeous (colors were chocolate, fuschia and purple)-hot! hot! hot! The view was to die for and the desserts put 100 lbs on you just looking at them. Signature drinks were great for the drinkers but almost sent me to the moon . Isis knows I am not a drinker so she bought me my own little bottles of Pepsi and Arbor Mist. I had a great time and partied off every pound. Thank Isis!!

It's Tea Time!!

I organized a Housewarming Tea for my cousin a week ago. Since she is a tea drinker, I thought an afternoon tea would be a great theme for her event. The event was very cozy and intimate. She had about 35 of her close friends and family attend and we really had a great time. Here are some points about the event. Decor pics are coming soon

Colors for the event were chocolate and lime green. We used Evite.com for the invitations and I created a simple postcard with the above graphic for those who were not on email. We also gave out a small poem on green paper that thanked guest for coming to her house warming. The favors were the best. We chose iced teacup cookie favors that said "Home Sweet Home". Kudos to Angela and congrats on your new home !!

Branching Out

I was reading a colleague's blog today and thought her work was absolutely fabulous so I had to share it. Isha of Isha Foss Events shows pictures of ways she has used branches for her events. Although I loved all the pictures, my favorite is one from a Winter Wonderland theme done for a corporate client (see below).

I have a Bride getting married on Valentine's day who is also using branches so this was truly inspiring. I am one who loves the spring and summer and can do without the cold and snow that winter brings, but after seeing this I may be changing the theme for my 40th birthday party!!

Invitation Etiquette

Okay, I just really feel the need to address this issue. I see it happen to clients, I am seeing it happen to my friend who is planning her birthday party and I feel that now is the perfect time since there are so many holiday party invites going around.

When you receive an invitation to event, here are important things to remember,

The name on the invitation is who is invited. You should not take it upon yourself to invite anyone (boyfriend, your best friend, your mother etc.) It is not your event! If you are not sure whether the invitation includes a guest, contact the host and ask before you respond.
You should not assume that you can bring someone with you. It doesn't matter if the party is at someone's home or at a facility. When someone hosts a private party, the guest list is private.
Don't argue or debate with the host about his/her guest list. It is not a free for all nor is it up for discussion.
Don't ask if you can pay for your guest, it's not the club.
If you get an invitation that specifies how many people are invited, please do not cross it out and add more people. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out. It is what it is.
RSVP by the date requested or consider yourself unable to attend. People have a deadline with their caterer so please don't delay the process.
When you accept the invitation, then the next step is to actually Show up at the event.
If you have to cancel (should be an emergency reason only), contact the host ASAP and it would be courteous to offer to pay for your plate. Let him/her decline the offer.

To the host....
In order to keep your head on straight, here are some suggestions for you.

Specify the name of the people who are invited or if you are allowing the person to bring a guest (Mr. John Doe or Mr. John Doe and Guest)
If you can, always include a person's spouse (work functions are an exception)
STAND YOUR GROUND and don't let anyone stress you out or self invite. That is a definite no no. Remember - You are in control and it is is your event. Enjoy every part of it.

Wii has it all!!

My mother in-law bought my daughter the Nintendo Wii game system for her birthday back in June. It seems to be really great as she uses it to play games and work out. Now they came out with a Wedding Designer game that I think is just perfect for Jr. Wedding Divas like mine. Anyone who knows my little Diva knows that this is right up her alley and is a great Christmas gift for her. In this "game" you get to

Design the weddings of six different brides, each with their own personality and specific tastes.
Create the wedding invitations, choose the dress, veil, and bouquet and outfit the entire wedding party.
Decide on the location, music, venue, decorations, and more!
Live the big day and use your camera to capture all the perfect moments for the wedding

Reviews show that kids go through the game quickly and since there are only 6 brides, your choices are limited but I think it is a great start for designing minds. Will let you know my review on it after Christmas.

Best R&B Wedding Songs

As Brides prepare for their special day, finding the perfect wedding song(s) for the ceremony and reception can sometimes present a challenge for the Brides that love R&B music. Sure there are a lot of R&B love songs out there but you tend to hear the same songs at most weddings. One thing that is common amongst most Brides is that they want to find a song that no one else has used before. And that is when I say.. Let the Challenge begin!! I would love to see a group of artists (both R&B and Gospel singers) put together a CD of all new, never been heard before Wedding Songs for 2009. That would be awesome and I guarantee you that it will sell like hotcakes. If anyone in the entertainment industry is reading this blog, please take this suggestion and run with it (just make sure I get the credit for the idea).

While "new" is great, "classic" songs will never go out of style. I am amazed that songs I used for my wedding 13 years ago are still being used by Brides today. My husband and I danced to "In You" by Glenn Jones for our First Dance and one of my clients is using the same song for her First Dance in February of 2009. She and I joked about how I will be reminiscing as the song is played at her wedding.

Happy Thanksgiving

What a wonderful time to give thanks for all the many blessings that we have. I am thankful for my family, my friends and for just being alive.

I spent my Thanksgiving watching the parade, cooking dinner and then went to have dinner at my mom's. My dinner consisted of ham, turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing, broccoli, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, corn pudding (which my Mom made) and cranberry sauce. For dessert, I made for the first time old fashioned banana pudding. I made it from scratch just like my grandmother used to make it and I have to say it was delicious.

Enjoy your holiday, Black Friday and the weekend!! Now rush to the gym on Saturday to work it off.

What better way to escape the cold weather of the Tri-State area than to head on over to Mt. Laurel, New Jersey and enjoy a day or night with the family at CoCo Keys Water R esort. My good friend and colleague, Isis Petrie of Posh Events, LLC were invited to Pre-Grand Opening Event at the resort courtesy of Angela Lustig, Sales Managers at the Marriott Mt. Laurel. They originally expected the water park to be completed last summer but hey, better late than never and it is truly a place you must visit. Perfect for a weekend outing, birthday parties or just a day away. They have so many options but it guaranteed to put a smile on your child's face. There is even a section upstairs for the little ones and they can watch a movie while playing (see below).

I have stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge before and my daughter absolutely loved it. But now we have an indoor water park less than 1/2 hour away which is great. The food was great and I am always one that is down for a good meal. From beef and fish to lobster and scallops, it truly added a touch of flavor to the event. They also had a live band and a cake that was to die for. We topped off the night with enjoying a complimentary card to the CoCo Keys Arcade. Skee-ball anyone?? That's Isis' favorite game. :) Here are a few pictures I took but I missed the bucket tipping over.

Be sure to check out their site and schedule a get away for the family. Regardless of the season, it's like summer all year round.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

This is a pictures that I took with my phone of a rainbow that stretched across the Philadelphia skyline. My photo was taken as I drove down Fox Street toward Hunting Park Avenue. It was such a beautiful and exciting view that I had to pull over and take the picture. I took pictures inside and outside of the car (but not while I was driving). I was in awe as I stood in the rain admiring nature at its best. (I was already having a bad hair day so it didn't matter). It was a special moment and was glad I was able to share it with my best friend (my daughter Devynn).

Cake Designing Divas

I spent all day watching Amazing Wedding Cakes on the WE channel and watching the Cake Divas, the Cake Girls and the Cake Atelier create some very unique wedding and engagement cakes. I can't say that I liked every cake I saw but I admire their attention to detail. This points out to me that Wedding Professionals across the board from Wedding planners, chefs, graphic designers to floral designers have a lot in common. We all have to pay attention to detail, all get frustrated behind the scenes at some time or another and we all work hard to get the job done. I love it!! When I watched these teams work together, it reminded me so much of my own team. The clients primarily work with the owner but it takes the work of the entire team to make it happen. The end result is a fabulous product that the client adores. After watching the work behind the scenes, I have a deeper appreciation for the work of a cake designer. In upcoming months, I will feature some of my own local cake designers and their work. Here is a cake from one of my own weddings created by Jaime at Centerton Country Club.

Somethings Even the Best Planners Can't Control

I couldn't help but share this clip. While I am sure the Bride did not see this as humorous at all, what else can you do but to laugh it off? I feel for this Bride and hope that she had a second dress to slip into. I thank God this was not one of my weddings and wonder if she had a planner, what did she do? From a planner's perspective, we do our best to be ready for emergencies and the "what ifs" but some things are way beyond our control. One thing to remember is that no wedding is perfect but some mistakes can be avoided. Although the view was beautiful, I would not have suggested that the ceremony take place so close to the water just in case an accident like this occurred.

My heart goes out to the Bride and Groom and I pray that they were able to recover from this. By the way, everyone has focused on the Bride but the officiant was thrown into the water too. Wonder if they'll be charged any extra fees? I pray that everything worked out okay for all involved.

YES WE CAN AND YES WE DID!!

Our prayers have been answered. Barack Obama has won the 2008 Presidential Election!! This is such a major moment in history and I am so glad to have been a part of it.

I watched the news all night and refused to go to sleep until the announcement was made. I didn't care how sick I was feeling, I was determined to see that historic moment take place. I saw a record number of people come out today in my area alone so I just knew in my heart that he would win Pennsylvania. When I received my friend Isis' text that he won PA, I screamed out "Yes, yes, yes". Once we won Ohio, I knew we were on our way but kept watching, wondering and waiting for the rest of the states to report. I was particularly waiting for results from Virginia and Florida, especially because of what happened the last time. Then it happened in an instant. One minute the computer showed 207 and the next it went past 300 and I couldn't see anything anymore because the tears just filled my eyes. As soon as I heard the announcement, I started to cry and just began to praise the Lord saying "Hallelujah, Thank you Jesus". My son called from college to say, "We won!". I replied, "I know and then he said...Wait are you really crying?" All I could say was "Yep! " Eventually, I pulled myself together and saw we won Florida, Virginia (whose race was really tight for a moment) and California which put us over the top.

Today I am proud as an African American but also proud as an American. Our nation is finally getting the CHANGE it needs. Let's bring our troops home, fix the economy, bring jobs back to America, insure the uninsured and put education first. The best part for me is not just knowing that we elected our first African American President but knowing that I was a part of this history and my vote made a difference.

Let us remember to keep his family in prayer as they grieve the loss of his grandmother. Let us also remember to pray for him, his family and his cabinet daily. Pray for their strength and that they would be guided and directed by God as they lead this country. Congratulations to Barack Obama our 44th President and the entire Obama campaign for their tireless efforts.

Where ever you are, where ever you live, today is one of the most important days of our lives. I just wanted to remind everyone to vote today!!! People died for our right to vote so the least we can do is exercise the right. I am fighting the flu but I am dragging my butt to the polls today. Your vote does count.

Please encourage everyone you know to do the same and offer assistance to any seniors in your area that need a ride to the polling place. Get those lazy bones out of their homes and bring them out too.

Victory is Ours!!! -Phillies are #1

Congratulations to our Phillies for bringing home the gold!!! Philadelphia fans are so excited and happy that our team won the World Series. Our streets were filled with thousands of people and lots of noise the moment victory became ours. Tonight it was freezing outside but the excitement amongst fans could not keep us inside. My family and I flew to the door along with other neighbors hooping and hollering a victory chant. Then we all got our common sense back and went back inside to get warm and get the kids ready for bed.

People say that Philadelphia fans are the worst because we tend to get a little hyped (and yes some have been known to be obnoxious too) but overall most of us are cool. We are just SUPER EXCITED and we support our teams no matter what. From the Eagles, the Sixers, the Flyers, and Philadelphia Soul to our new WORLD SERIES CHAMPS, the Philadelphia Phillies, we are just Philly Fanatics!!

Just like the Supremes said... No wind, no rain can stop us baby. Victory is ours!!

Confessions of the Wedding Diva

For the most part, I am a fairly laid-back, chilled out kinda gal. Ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you the same thing. Not much ruffles my feathers, I don't take myself that seriously and I generally walk around with a smile on my face. Life is good - so why not??

However, today - my sunny disposition just got annihilated.

So here's my simple remedy to getting back to the Linnyette I know and love:
I'm going to need ALL of the non-professional, "wannabe", think-you-are wedding planners/coordinators/producers/directors (take your pick here!) to step aside and let the true blue pros handle all of this matrimonial/wedding planning/coordination stuff. If you don't know what you're doing - just step away from the bouquet!

This is a topic that has come up before, not only for me, but for my colleagues also. Honestly, I'm sick and tired (and I'm sure that I speak for my "professional" brethren also) of these shenanigans. What part of "there are no do-overs" don't you get? What part of "you need a business plan" don't you understand? What part of "you need to know what the heck you are doing before you open up shop and say " I am a wedding planner" do you need me to explain to you?

Folks - cheap is what it says it is. Cheap. Really. So don't just base this important decision on price alone. ASK for references, ASK to see previous work, ASK about payment plans/policies, ASK what their wedding planning philsophy is, ASK how much EXPERIENCE they have under the belt!!

Does this automatically disqualify a new-to-the-industry planner? No - it doesn't. There's some great, fresh, new talent that's coming on the horizon, but the valid difference between these people and the "wannabes" is that the newly minted professional planners are taking the time, energy and effort that is needed in order to start their business off on the RIGHT foot. They are getting educated, they are interning with seasoned planners, they are managing their new enteprises the way it should be done. In short - they are running a business and their actions speak to that.

I've been in the game a minute - so I know what goes on. I am also painfully aware that there are so many brides and grooms out there who've gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to hiring the "planner". They didn't do their homework - which is so important. You have to know what you are getting, and you want to make sure that all of your ducks are lined up in a row. Don't settle for anything less - you deserve a wonderful occasion and you deserve to work with someone who has your best interest at heart and who will produce a magnificent event that you'll remember always.......

To all of the "planners/coordinators/directors, etc. who fit the description I started this post with..you know who you are. And you should be really, really ashamed of yourselves. But, somehow - I know you're not. So before you decide to "blow" up this blog entry or my email with your negative responses...think. Think about what you are not doing - and more importantly, think about how you can improve what you should be doing. I don't want or need to bash anyone incessantly - but I love my industry and there are many others like me who view the planning of a wedding as an honorable profession - one that we are so proud to be a part of.

I am not afraid to get up on the veritable soapbox and speak my mind. Wedding planners are now literally a dime a dozen...but when you hook up with one who knows their stuff, it's like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Trust me on this one.

Now...back to our regularly scheduled programming :)

Hold On - A Change is coming!!

As I mentioned in an earlier post, this election is so important. Originally I wasn't sure if I should share my opinions about this election as I didn't want to start a political debate but after watching yesterday's debate, I can't hold it any longer. I feel that it is okay for me to express my opinions since that is what this blog is all about.... WORDS FROM THE HEART. I know that others may disagree with me and that's okay. We all have the freedom of speech and the freedom of choice. My choice for the 2008 Presidential election Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

My reason for supporting Obama and Biden em is simple. I believe it is time for a CHANGE in the White House. I believe that the weak state of our economy, the unnecessary lost lives in the war and fact that the breaks are being given to the wealthy all the result of the Bush Administration. With McCain and Palin in office, we would have more of the same. I wasn't impressed by the Vice Presidential debate and I don't see Palin as middle income nor do I see McCain as a maverick like she repeatedly said. I think Palin avoided the questions because she didn't know the answers. I will give her credit for being a female politician and for doing a great job for Alaska but I don't believe she is qualified to be the Vice President. The role of Vice President is too critical as it is one step away from being President especially should something happen to the President.

Barack Obama's views on the war, the economy, education, the right to choose, and small businesses appeals more to me. I am small business owner and I need someone who care about little ole me and others like me who are trying to live out our dreams. I support his theory about creating jobs here and not rewarding those bigger companies who send jobs overseas with bigger tax breaks. If I dial another customer service # and find that it has been outsourced overseas, I will scream. The United States government needs to focus on our own country. We are always focused on helping other countries but we need to put the focus on our on own country. We need jobs here. Our businesses here need to flourish. We have hungry people and homeless people here, we have uninsured people here who need the assistance of our government. I am not an advocate for abortion but I don't believe the government should have the right to take away a woman's right to choose. To me, Senator Obama's campaign brings it all back home and that is why I am in support of his policies, his campaign and I applaud him and his family for fighting to win this election. See this race is not about race for me..it's about the issues. Am I excited for him as an African American, you bet and I can't wait to see him make history.

But this will only happen if the American people show up and Vote!! Enough said...now let's get back to work!!

VOTE!!! VOTE!!! VOTE!!!

This is such an important election and it is so important that everyone votes. There is no excuse for anyone not to vote unless the law prohibits you from voting. I am a firm believer in voting and have been since I was 18. People died for my right to vote and I am going to exercise until I die. The deadline to register in Pennsylvania has passed but there is still time in New Jersey (October 11th) and Delaware (October 14th).

There are so many of our young people away at college that just don't realize this. I talked to my godson yesterday and he didn't know anything about an Absentee Ballott so I thought this is a good place to spread the word. Personally, if you can make it to the polling place, do all that you can to be there but if you can't, use your right to an Absentee Ballot. Don't let any tricky stuff happen like they did in Florida in the last Presidential election.

If you are registered in the City of Philadelphia and can't make it to your designated polling place, please call in to get an Absentee Ballot or an Alternative Ballot. An Absentee Ballot allows for you to submit your vote via mail if you can not be physically present to vote. An Alternative Ballot is for those 65 or older or those disabled who are assigned to an inaccessible polling place. Emergency Absentee Ballots are also available if for some reason you aren't able to make it to the polls due to a medical emergency but there are deadlines regarding this as well.

The deadline for Absentee ballots in Philadelphia : Ballots MUST be RECEIVED by the County Board of Elections no later than 5:00 PM the Tuesday before an election. Postmarks are NOT honored; applications must be in the office before the deadline.

To obtain an absentee, alternative or emergency ballot or to get more information on the requirements (in Philadelphia county), please visit http://www.phillyelection.com/abeng.htm.

Whatever you do, make sure you VOTE!! We need a CHANGE.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month!! This is especially important to me because I have lost two loved ones to breast cancer. Our Hometown Heros - We Salute you!!

On September 5, 2008, two of Philadelphia's finest were involved in a terrible accident trying to do what they do best...keeping our city safe. A 16 year-old fugitive cared nothing about the lives of others he would affect as he intentionally accelerated the gas of the stolen vehicle he was driving and hit their police cruiser. All he cared about was not going back to jail.

That is a night I will never forget because someone I/we love dearly, Officer Terry Tull (husband of API Consultant, Sharnell Tull), was the driver the vehicle this teenager hit. I was with Sharnell as we drove to the hospital via police escort not knowing what her husband's condition was. I can't find the words to describe how helpless I felt not being able to take my sister's pain and anguish away. I also can't tell you how it felt when I saw them wheel a body past me in the hall. I knew it was an officer because someone shouted a command and all the fellow officers stood at attention and saluted as they walked by. Thank God my sister who is also a police officer was there because I started going crazy not knowing who it was they wheeled passed me.

I later discovered that Terry survived the accident but had suffered some major injuries but would be okay. His partner, the Late Officer Isabel Nazario affectionately known as "Izzy", lost her life but died a hero. My heart was crushed for her daughter and her family but it immediately made me realize how unpredictable yet precious life is.

This was such a senseless act that caused so much trauma, grief and pain to a lot of people...family and friends, the Police Department and the community as a whole.

All the teenager cared about was not going back to jail. He didn't think about the pain he caused Izzy's 15 year old daughter who now has to go through the prime time of her life without her mom, the pain of her a mother having to bury her child, the pain of her sister who is also a police officer losing her sister and friend, the pain of her fiance who will never get to marry the woman he loved and the pain of her partner who has to live with the memories of that tragic night and who will one day return to work but work will never be the same for him. I see the pain of his actions because my loved one is hurting and things for his family have changed all because this young man didn't THINK, didn't care and didn't value LIFE!!

Too many times, people make excuses for the defendant and say they were troubled, had a hard life, etc. I'm sorry, I've heard enough of that. I worked in Victim Services at the Philadelphia DA's Office for 9 years and I am sick of the excuses. These people know exactly what they are doing and the courts have been too lenient on them. If you do the crime, you should do the time. They need to see and feel the effects of their actions. There is no excuse and I am expecting the Criminal Justice System to do what's right not just because they are COPS but because what he did was wrong.

My blog is about the real me. I write about the weddings and fun things but I also write about things that are serious and I am not afraid to tell you my honest opinion. I am a "keep it real" type of person and the violence that I see from day to day is getting out of hand and I am sick of it. I felt this was just something I had to get off my chest because it scared me, hurt me and it makes me angry every time I think about what this young man did.

The API family wishes to extend its deepest sympathy to the Nazario family and the Tull family. You lost a beautiful person but she didn't die in vain. She died doing what knew was right and she will always be in our hearts and will always be remembered. Our prayers also go out the families of Detective McDonald, Officer Cassidy and Sgt. Liczbinski.

To Terry and Sharnell - we love you both and are here for you. Terry -we are blessed that God brought you out of the accident and I know he will bring you through all the mental, physical and emotional challenges you will face. We are praying for you everyday. Thank you for putting your life on the line every day and thank you for your bravery and your courage.

Hair's Looking at You!!!

What does every Bride or event client need to make them look GLAMOROUS before they slip on "the dress" or get transformed by the make up artist?

Yep you got it, A FABULOUS HAIRDO.

So I went to the source to give you all some great tips. What better source than my own stylist who I love and trust with not just my own hair but my daughter's too. I am very picky about my hair and if my hair doesn't look good neither do I. So when helping my clients get it together for their special day, the hairstyle is not part of the final touches but it's part of the foundation.

Shonya Payne (pronounced Sha-nigh-a) is a Philadelphia native that has been doing hair for 13 years. She works at Xquisite Hair Design which is located in the Cedarbrook Plaza Mall in Wyncote, PA (most locals just call it Cheltenham). Shonya is known for her precision hair cuts, attention to hair care and her ability transform a look from DULL to FABULOUS.

Shonya's interest in hair began as a young child. She said growing up, her mom really didn't know how to do hair too well. One day after her mom messed up her hair, she decided that she'd be the stylist for her and her younger sister. She began taking Cosmetology classes at Swinson Skill Center while attending Northeast High School. While in school, she worked part time as a shampoo assistant at a salon in Mt. Airy. She immediately began her work as a stylist after completing her state boards and getting licensed. She later went back to Empire B eauty School to get her teacher's license and is now qualified to be a platform stylist or teach at the beauty school of her choice. Shonya's philosophy.... if you start with a great haircut, you can achieve any great hairstyle.

Shonya's Advice/Tips for Brides

1. Schedule a trial run in advance (especially if you don't have a regular stylist) and be sure to bring your headpiece/tiara. This ensures that you and the stylist are on the same page.

2. Pick a style that will work for both the wedding day and your honeymoon.

3. LET YOUR STYLIST BE CREATIVE. Its great to start out with a picture you saw in a magazine but its important to allow your stylist to be creative and customize that look to fit you. Just because the style looked good in the book doesn't mean it is going to look good on you. That is where the expertise of your stylist comes in. Shonya's #1 pet peeve is when people try to tell her how to do her job.

The greatest piece of advice I can give my clients is TRUST THE PROFESSIONAL you hired and let them do their job!! I have no patience for those who want to micro-manage...if you feel like you have to do that, why hire the professional in the first place? Relax, enjoy and be pampered - leaving the driving to us.

4. If you are going to get your eyebrows waxed or threaded, Shonya advises you to schedule your appointment at least one to two weeks prior to the wedding date in case you develop a reaction.

5. Braids are not recommended for weddings. Although she has done it before, she does not recommend braids for weddings. She believes braids take away from the glamour of a wedding day hairstyle. They are also harder to maneuver with certain headpieces, combs and tiaras.

6. Pick people in your wedding that are going to be a help, not a hindrance to you. The Bride should not be stressed on her day (and neither should her stylist).

7. When scheduling appointments for your party, make sure the stylist spaces them out and that the you have the proper stylists/assistants on your team to do the hairstyle of choice. Try to spread them amongst other stylists in the salon which will move things along faster. The main objective is to get the Bride in and out.

8. Appointments for the wedding party should be done the day before the wedding and only the Bride should have her hair done on the day of the wedding ( I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!!!)

9. Make provisions in the budget to have your stylist do an on-site visit the morning of the wedding. This will save you time and keep your stress low. Prep work can be done the night before final touches are done on site. (My suggestion in this order are shower, hair then make up)

10. To stylists..... Don't try to book regular appointments when you have a bridal party. Block the time out of your appointment book and concentrate solely on that wedding party.

Stop the Violence in Philadelphia....PLEASE

I have to speak what is on my heart because I have had it with the violence that has plagued our city. The number of murders in our city is getting out of hand and the number of police officers that have been killed in the past year is unbelievable and unacceptable. We have to stop sitting back and saying that's a shame, somebody needs to do something and we need to start being a part of the change. The younger generation (and some of the old too) have no respect for life.

I don't know who the readers of my blog are but if we can bond together, pray together and stand together to make a difference, maybe things in this world can change. For those who know people out there in the wrong lifestyle, stop turning your head the other way and keeping your lips closed. When someone gets hurt it affects not just the victim but there is a family and a community that is affected as well.

To the young men and women in Philadelphia, turn off the music for a minute and take a listen to life. Your life is precious, don't throw it away. You have options, PUT THE GUNS DOWN!!! To the law abiding citizens in Philadelphia, we need to mentor these young people and stop them before they destroy their lives. If you are not a part of the solution then you are a part of the problem.

PHILADELPHIA - LET'S STOP THE VIOLENCE. We can not do it alone, we must band together as one to make a change. I declare... PEACE ON THE STREETS, PEACE IN EVERY HOME, PEACE OF MIND FOR ALL AND THE PEACE OF GOD IN OUR COMMUNITY.

Bittersweet Joy

We did a wedding on Sunday, July 27, 2008 for Sheila and Hasan Heath. This couple was such a wonderful couple to work with. At the end of the reception, Hasan asked me why did I look down? I felt myself getting very emotional and had to hold back the tears. I had worked with this couple for over a year and now their day was over. I was very excited for them but it was bittersweet for me because now I wouldn't be working with them anymore and the reality that this groom would be leaving for Iraq in a month began to hit me.

When I originally met this couple, their date was set for August 30, 2008 but due to military orders he received, we had to move the date up a month. The wedding took place last week and everything was beautiful!! Although it rained pretty bad, it didn't affect a thing. They had a beautiful ceremony which included an Arch of Swords salute at the end by the members of Hasan's unit and they were able to take pictures outside as planned.

The Bride was stunning and her beautiful personality made her even prettier. The Groom was sharp as a tack in his Army National Guard uniform and together they just made a beautiful couple. I love happy endings but this was one that I didn't want to end. This couple's wedding will be featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer's Love Column but we don't the exact date it will run. Stay tuned for details and pictures.

Hasan, we salute you and the members of your platoon for your dedication to our country. Sheila and Hasan, we congratulate you again. We love you and we are praying for both of you. Hasan, we pray that you and your unit will return home safely!!

Below is a submission from one of our newest team members, Amani Bright. I gave the team an opportunity to contribute to the blog and these are the words from her heart. As you can imagine, the tears began to fall when I read this:

"It’s funny how life turns out and the people that we meet who affect our lives. Not long ago I was out of work searching not only for a job but for a long term career that I would be happy with. In the midst of my searching, I came across a company called Always a Positive Image, LLC. Not only because I was at the beginning stages of my engagement, but I liked planning events. I figured by doing some research in both areas, I could kill two birds with one stone.
I found a couple of wedding planning companies but never reached out to anyone. It wasn’t until I saw an ad for the “Designed for Success” business workshop that I became interested in contacting Always a Positive Image. I figured that this company must be worth the time and effort to contact, if they were taking the time to conduct a workshop. The initial contact was by email. I explained that I was looking for a planner for my wedding, somewhere to work, and to attend the Designed for Success workshop. I know it’s a lot, but I’m glad that I put it all out there in the beginning.

Anyway to make a long story short, I was interviewed to be an intern and hired, I attended the workshop and had a ball, and I am slowly but surely getting my wedding plans together. In the short time that I have been with API, I have learned so much from Deidre and the rest of the family. Everyone brings a piece of themselves to the table and the end result is pure excellence. I am so honored to be a part of this company. I will be helping with my first wedding in a couple weeks and I am absolutely thrilled. Also, I wanted to mention something else. The Knot Magazine just recognized Always a Positive Image for Best Event Planning Company in the Tri-State Area for 2008. Well, this is something that the staff and the clients knew all along. It was about time the world found out just how great API is and always will be."

Bridezilla

Well this show has prompted a lot of attention but to be honest I only watched a few episodes and that was enough for me. TV hypes up a lot of these girls to be worse than they really are but either way, I don't do Bridezillas.

Have I come across them? Of course but I don't tolerate them. You can have everything you want and more the way you want it for your wedding without being a Bridezilla. Remember that your wedding is one day but relationships last a lifetime. Don't let your ego be your downfall.

As a professional, I will always work hard to see that my client's dreams become a reality but when the Bride is sweetheart, you want to do all that you can for them. When I have a Bride who is the opposite,you get what is written in your contract and that is it. If you hire a professional, trust their judgement and know that they will do what you hired them to do. Don't micro-manage (that is something I really dislike). If you have to micro manage, why did you hire a professional?

It is okay to know what you want and to be specific about it but when you carry an air of selfishness and it's all about me, you will truly find yourself by yourself. I love working with Brides who understand the value of what I do and trust my professional judgement. I also enjoy working with Brides who know what they want,or are on top of their research but understand they still need a professional to help pull it all together so they can enjoy their day. If they are a Bridezilla, thank you but I am not the planner for you. I'd rather save my time and energy for those that appreciate what I do.

Babies R US too!!

Many people think we just do weddings but we are a full service event planning business which means we do it all. This year we had four baby showers so far. Normally we get one or two a year but this year we've had 4 in the past 6-7 months. I don't know what's in the water in Philadelphia, but I will stick to the bottled water.

It amazes me about how much things have changed since I had a baby 11 years ago. Our first shower of the year was for Sylvia Smith and her theme was Winnie the Pooh. What a surprise it was too see that Pooh got a new look. Colors for this shower were mint green and yellow.

The second shower was for Shantel and Robert Hilton (whose wedding we planned in 2006). They choose the Honeybee theme by Celebrity Nursery designer, Wendy Bellissimo Colors for this shower were yellow, black and sage green.

The last two showers were for the same person who happens to be one of API's own, Olivia Goodman. We surprised her for the first one which was a shower our staff gave her at Hibachi's Japanese Restaurant. We faked her out by saying we were having an office dedication at our new office and then I was taking the staff out to lunch. She is one you can never surprise but we got her good. The colors for both showers was brown and pink but never do we do the exact same set up twice :) Pictures from this shower are coming soon.

There seems to be a big baby boom in the Philadelphia area this year so I will be sure not to drink the water. :)

Asian Grandeur

I didn't get to take as many detailed pictures as I would have liked to because I was busy setting up. It was Mother's Day weekend, we only had 5 people available for set up and only had 3.5 hours to transform this room. Here are a few pictures of our Asian Grandeur Graduation party this past weekend. Unfortunately, you can't really see the lanterns that were hanging but you can get an idea of the look we created. Each table was named after an Asian City and the check in table displayed pictures from each of those cities.

The office of Always A Positive Image has found a new home. In between events in June we will be moving into our new office on Summit and Walnut Streets in Jenkintown. We are very excited and looking forward to our new space. Once we move in, I will send pictures of the office. Right now the office is being used for storage so I can't publish those pictures. I've been tagged by the Diva!! Linnyette Hall of Premiere Event Management tagged me two weeks ago and I apologize for just responding. I am supposed to tell you about 5 songs I like but would normally never fess up to. I listed my five but couldn't help going overboard just a little :)

I was born in the late 60's so I love oldies music. I guess that's because that's what I grew up listening to. It's not uncommon for me to be found singing some oldies but goodies. The funny thing is that I know all the words but can't begin to tell you the artist. Here are few songs I very rarely fess up to...

1. Hop on the Bus Gus...I have no idea if this is the right title because I only know the words. Hop on the Bus Gus, make a new plan Stan, don't need to be coy Roy, just set yourself free!! Something that my uncle played a lot growing up.

2. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper - just an old time favorite from when I was a teenager.

3. Control - Janet Jackson (it's not that I mind people knowing I like Janet's music but for those that know me, they would never let me live this down b/c I am truly a control freak. I think that is the planner in me :)

4. Fuego Fuego. - The Cheetah Girls. Now you know I have a 10 year old so I hear nothing but Radio Disney all day long. Hannah Montanna (Miley Cyrus), the Cheetah Girls, the Jonas brothers. Yep I have got those tunes in my head and can't shake them but I really love Fuego. Love the beat and yes can be found dancing to it in the mirror. But don't let my daughter know.

5. Crank Dat - Soulja Boy - I know there is controversy over this song but I really like the beat and the dance. Soulja boy indicated it is nothing more than a dance and that the rumors came from haters. When the song comes on I will try to do the motions until my daughter says ,"Sit down Mom you're embarrassing me." But I say, whose hating now??? She just doesn't want anyone to know her mom can work that!!

6. Tin Man - Dewey Bunnell. This is a song my Uncle Michael played a lot growing up and it is just in my head. So when I hear it, it brings back great memories of him.

I'll Always Love My Mama!!

Happy Mother's Day to everyone!! Okay I am a few days late with posting this wish but everyday is Mother's Day for me. Never wait until a holiday to tell someone you love them or you appreciate them.

I love my mom to life and I thank God for her. She and I don't always see eye to eye but that's because we are exactly a like except she is much more stylish than me. We call her Miss Priss. She has taught me so many things but she has lead by example to show me what it takes to be a real MOM.

Although I am a Mom, I still look at Mother's Day as a day for my mom but my daughter reminds me that it is about me too. My day started off with a self made gift from my daughter which really touched my heart . Then we went to church. My daughter had to usher and had been asked to read the Scripture for the day. As I watched her, I got a little emotional because I realize my daughter is growing up but watching her made me so proud. That was all the gift I needed.

After church, my family went to brunch at the Marriott in Downtown Philadelphia. The food at the Marriott's new restaurant, "13" was great and I'd recommend going there any day. I told my readers that I like food so I truly tasted every entree they offered except the lamb and I left the dessert alone except for the fruit tart. But the food was so filling, we had to rest in the lounge area for a bit before we could go anywhere. After our short rest, the three divas (My Mom, My little lady Devynn and I) went to see Kooza by Cirque Du Soleil! The show was awesome.

It was truly a great day and we had a ball just being together.

One Designing Diva

It's never to late to share. In April, I attended a Power Course led by one of my favorite planners, colleagues and mentors, Linnyette Richardson-Hall of Premiere Event Management in Baltimore, MD. Well I already knew this woman was awesome but I was blown away by her course.

The Power Course was awesome but her designs...well that took me to another level. I was so excited, I almost cried (forgive me I am an emotional person :) . Below are some pictures of the sample set ups she did at the conference. No matter how long you have been around in the business, you can always learn more. My favorite is the cake table!!

The words to a serious old school Jam that I absolutely love!!! By the way in addition to all the other things listed that I love, I forgot to list Old School Rap. My absolute favorite. That's when they rapped about fun things. No violence, no sexual content...just clean fun rap that you could dance too. But that's a whole different project.

Okay, I've been gone for a minute but I am back. No excuses, I have just been a busy bee!!!
